Teeth restoration

Composites are fillings designed to match the color of your teeth. The two main ingredients are plastic resin and a filler of finely ground glass-like particles.

The dentist matches the composite material to the patient’s tooth color. Because they blend so well with your tooth enamel, composites are used where dental work could be most visible including the front teeth and at the gumlines. Composites may not work if a cavity is too large or an area is subject to heavy chewing. Your dentist knows when composite resin is most appropriate as a restoration material. For many patients, white fillings, or composites, make a healthy smile a natural looking smile. When simple tooth filling is not appropriate inlays or onlays can be choosen.

Inlays

Inlays are tooth-colored restorations placed on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. They can be used instead or in place of silver fillings.

Onlays

Onlays can be used many times in place of crowns, allowing preservation of more tooth structure.

Considerations

Depending on their size and location, fillings can reduce the strength of a tooth by up to 50%. Inlays and onlays, on the other hand, can actually increase the strength of the tooth by up to 75%. Inlays and onlays are fabricated outside of the mouth and therefore are capable of being made much stronger than typical fillings. Inlays and onlays are especially suitable for the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They can be the same color as your teeth.
